State-of-the-Art PCD Service Equipment
PCD tooling cannot be serviced using conventional carbide sharpening equipment.
Restoring a PCD cutting edge requires highly specialized machinery, sophisticated measuring systems and experienced technicians who understand the extremely tight tolerances involved in diamond tooling.
Our Marietta facility utilizes fully automated CNC PCD sharpening and erosion technology, supported by precision optical measuring and inspection equipment, brazing capabilities and specialized tooling systems.
This equipment allows us to accurately reproduce complex cutting geometries and maintain consistent edge quality from tooth to tooth.
GDP Tooling made its first major investment in dedicated PCD sharpening technology in 1997. Nearly three decades later, we continue to invest in advanced equipment and technology to provide manufacturers with a dependable domestic source for professional PCD tool service with the latest PCD grinding technology in the market.
More Than PCD Sharpening — We Repair Diamond Tools
A damaged PCD tool does not necessarily need to be replaced.
Depending upon the condition and design of the tool, our technicians can evaluate it for repair and refurbishment. Services may include:
- Precision PCD edge resharpening
- Replacement of damaged or missing PCD tips
- PCD tip brazing
- Cutting-edge restoration
- Relief and clearance correction
- Profile restoration
- Tool inspection and measurement
- Evaluation of damaged tooling
- Complete PCD tool refurbishment
Repairing a high-value PCD tool can often be considerably more economical than replacing it.
Our technicians evaluate incoming tooling to determine the appropriate service required and whether repair is practical.
Why Professional PCD Sharpening Matters
PCD cutting tools represent a substantial investment, but their exceptionally long operating life is one of the reasons they can provide such a low cost per machined part.
That advantage depends upon proper servicing.
PCD is an extremely hard cutting material, and restoring its cutting edge requires precise control of cutting geometry, relief angles and edge condition. Even small variations can affect finish quality, cutting pressure, tool life and machine performance.
For this reason, PCD tooling should be serviced by a facility specifically equipped for diamond cutting tools.
At GDP Tooling, PCD tools are handled carefully throughout the entire service process — from incoming inspection and preparation through sharpening, repair, final inspection and packaging for return shipment.
Precision Takes Time
Professional PCD sharpening is fundamentally different from conventional carbide tool sharpening.
A single PCD tool can require hours of machine time.
For example, a 72-tooth PCD circular saw blade may require three hours or more of precision machine time simply to restore its cutting edges. Preparation, inspection, cleaning, repairs or additional operations such as restoring relief geometry can require additional time.
That time is necessary because each cutting edge must be restored accurately and consistently.
The objective is not simply to make a diamond edge sharp again. It is to return the tool to the correct geometry so it can deliver the performance and tool life expected from PCD tooling.
Protect Your Investment in PCD Tooling
Because PCD tools are considerably more valuable than conventional carbide tooling, proper handling is critical.
Cutting edges can be damaged during storage, handling and transportation before a tool ever reaches the sharpening machine. We recommend protecting PCD cutting edges carefully when removing tools from machinery and preparing them for shipment.
Our service team treats every PCD tool as the precision cutting instrument it is – and as carefully as one would handle an antique crystal vase!
