2-Flute Compression Chipbreaker Router Bit for Plywood

In stock

Price range: $119.00 through $150.00

Typical Machining Range: 16,000–18,000 RPM at 400–600 in./min. Actual parameters may vary based on tool diameter, material, machine rigidity and workholding. For application-specific settings, see our Chip Load Calculator.

The 2-flute compression chipbreaker router bit for plywood is engineered for high-quality CNC through-cutting where clean top and bottom edges, efficient chip evacuation and extended tool life are essential.

Unlike a conventional compression spiral, the chipbreaker cutting geometry breaks the material into smaller chips during machining, helping improve chip evacuation and reduce heat buildup at the cutting edge. The combination of upcut and downcut geometry directs cutting forces toward the center of the panel, minimizing splintering and tear-out on both faces of the plywood.

This tool is manufactured from a carbide grade specifically selected for plywood machining, rather than using a one-grade-fits-all approach. GDP Tooling utilizes different carbide grades and binder compositions across our compression-bit range to optimize performance for specific materials.

The 2-flute design is an excellent choice for standard CNC production feed rates while maintaining proper chip load and efficient chip removal. For higher production speeds, a 3-flute compression tool may be appropriate.

Product FAQs

A compression bit combines upcut and downcut cutting geometries in one router bit. The opposing cutting forces direct material toward the center of the panel, helping produce clean edges on both the top and bottom surfaces.

Compression bits are commonly used for plywood, melamine, laminated particleboard, MDF, veneered panels and other sheet materials where clean edges on both faces are required.

The upcut portion helps produce a clean bottom edge, while the downcut portion helps prevent chipping on the top surface. When the material is positioned within the compression zone, both faces can be machined cleanly in a single pass.

The upcut portion must remain within the thickness of the material for true compression cutting. If the upcut section extends above the top surface, it can cause chipping or tear-out on the top edge.  For machining on a flat table/spoilboard, a shorter upcut is preferable (usually +/- 3/16″).   For Pod/Rail machines, a longer upcut, such as 5/16″ is appropriate.

Yes. Through-cutting laminated and veneered panels is one of the primary applications for compression router bits because the geometry is designed to produce clean top and bottom edges simultaneously.

Choosing the correct compression bit involves more than selecting the right diameter and cutting length. Material, panel thickness, feed speed, flute configuration, upcut length and carbide grade all influence tool performance and tool life.
A common misconception is that a 3-flute compression bit produces a better finish than a 2-flute tool. It does not. The primary advantage of a 3-flute design is its ability to accommodate higher feed speeds while maintaining the proper chip load per cutting edge. This can significantly increase productivity on CNC machines capable of higher feed rates.
Carbide grade is equally important. GDP Tooling offers compression bits manufactured from three different carbide grades using different binder compositions, allowing the cutting material to be matched more closely to the material being machined. For this reason, we differentiate between compression tools optimized for MDF, melamine and solid wood, rather than treating all compression bits as interchangeable.
Panel thickness and upcut length must also be considered. For clean top and bottom edges, the upcut portion of the tool must remain below the top surface of the material so that the compression geometry functions correctly.

This tool combines compression cutting geometry, chipbreaker cutting edges and a carbide grade selected specifically for plywood machining. GDP Tooling uses different carbide grades and binder compositions for different materials rather than treating all compression applications alike.

The chipbreaker cutting geometry breaks the material into smaller chips during machining. This promotes more efficient chip evacuation, helps control heat buildup and supports productive CNC machining of plywood.

The lower upcut section helps produce a clean bottom edge while the upper downcut section directs cutting forces downward at the top surface. This opposing geometry compresses the material toward the center of the panel, reducing splintering on both faces.

Chipbreaker geometry divides the cutting action into smaller sections, producing smaller chips and reducing cutting resistance. This allows efficient material removal during aggressive CNC roughing operations.

No. Chipbreaker tools are primarily designed for efficient roughing and material removal. If a smooth finished edge is required, a finishing router bit or separate finishing pass should be used.

The primary difference is feed-rate capability. A 2-flute tool is appropriate for conventional CNC production speeds, while a 3-flute tool can accommodate higher feed rates while maintaining proper chip load per cutting edge. A 3-flute tool does not inherently provide a better finish.

Compression Chipbreaker Geometry Optimized for Plywood

The 2-flute compression chipbreaker router bit for plywood combines compression cutting geometry with chipbreaker cutting edges to deliver clean cuts and efficient material removal in demanding CNC plywood applications.

The compression design incorporates both upcut and downcut cutting sections. The lower upcut portion produces a clean bottom edge, while the upper downcut portion minimizes splintering and tear-out on the top surface. When the compression transition remains within the panel thickness, both faces can be finished cleanly during a single through-cutting operation.

The chipbreaker geometry further improves performance by breaking material into smaller, more manageable chips. This promotes efficient chip evacuation and helps reduce heat buildup during continuous production machining.

Equally important is the carbide itself. GDP Tooling does not use the same carbide formulation for every compression application. We offer three carbide grades with different binder compositions, allowing the cutting material to be matched to the workpiece. This tool utilizes the carbide characteristics selected specifically for plywood machining, while separate compression tools are available for materials such as melamine, MDF and solid wood.

The 2-flute configuration is not a compromise in finish quality compared with a 3-flute tool. Three-flute compression bits are primarily designed to accommodate higher CNC feed speeds while maintaining appropriate chip load. For standard production speeds, a properly applied 2-flute compression bit can provide excellent edge quality with efficient chip evacuation.
